How to Choose Plating Colours for Bag Hardware
Gold, light gold, gunmetal, antique bronze or matte black? A practical guide to choosing plating colours for bag hardware, with a colour card, a comparison table and tips for matching leather.

Hardware is often the first thing a customer touches on a bag, and its colour says a lot about the product. Light gold reads as premium, black looks modern and minimal, antique bronze feels vintage. The same buckle can look like a completely different product in a different finish. This guide walks through the 12 plating colours on our standard colour card, what each one suits, and how to specify colour so that your production matches your sample.
Quick answer
Fashion handbags: light gold, gold or rose gold.
Minimal, unisex and tech bags: e-coat black, black nickel or matte nickel.
Vintage, Western and leather-craft styles: antique bronze, red copper or antique silver.
Always approve the colour on a physical sample, never on a screen.

Gold tones: gold, light gold, matte gold and rose gold

Gold tones are the most requested colours for women’s handbags. Gold is bright and bold. Light gold is paler and more subtle, which is why many premium handbag brands choose it. Matte gold has a satin surface instead of a mirror shine, so it looks calmer and hides fingerprints and small scratches better. Rose gold has a pink tone that works well on pastel and nude leathers.

Tip: “gold” is not one colour. Different factories, and even different materials, give slightly different shades. If you already have a gold that you like, send it to us as the target rather than describing it in words.
Silver tones: silver, antique silver, matte silver and matte nickel

Silver is bright and cool, and suits clean modern designs. Antique silver is darkened in the recesses and polished on the high points, which makes engraved logos and textures stand out. It is a favourite for rivets, conchos and zipper pulls with detailed designs. Matte silver and matte nickel have a soft satin finish that looks technical and practical, a good fit for backpacks, workwear and unisex bags.

Dark and vintage tones: e-coat black, antique bronze, red copper and black nickel

E-coat black (electrophoretic coating) gives an even, solid black that suits all-black designs and modern minimal bags. Black nickel, often called gunmetal, is a dark metallic grey that still looks like metal, popular for men’s bags and belts. Antique bronze and red copper are warm vintage tones that pair naturally with tan leather, waxed canvas and Western-style products.

Antique finishes are partly hand-finished, so a little variation from piece to piece is normal and is part of the vintage look. If you need every piece to look identical, a solid colour such as black nickel or e-coat black is a safer choice.
Shiny or matte?
Most colours can be made in a polished (shiny) or a matte (satin) version. Polished hardware looks more dressy and catches the light; matte hardware looks more relaxed and modern and shows fewer fingerprints and fine scratches. On a bag with a lot of hardware, a matte finish can stop the metal from looking too loud.
How to choose the right colour
1. Start with your brand and price level
Look at your existing collection and your customers. Premium women’s handbags lean towards light gold and gold. Contemporary and unisex brands often use black, black nickel or matte nickel. Heritage and leather-craft brands suit antique bronze, red copper and antique silver.
2. Match the colour to the leather or fabric
Warm leathers such as tan, cognac and brown work with warm metals: gold, light gold, antique bronze and red copper. Cool colours such as black, grey and navy work with silver, nickel and black nickel. Black and white go with almost everything.
3. Keep every part on one bag the same colour
A bag may have D rings, snap hooks, a lock, a logo plate and zipper pulls. Order them together and in the same colour, so they can be plated and checked as one set. Parts plated in different places, or made of different materials (for example a zinc alloy lock and iron rings), can come out in slightly different shades of the same colour.

4. Think about how the bag will be used
Bags that are handled every day, like totes and backpacks, wear their hardware hard. Matte and darker finishes hide wear better than mirror-polished light colours. For load-bearing parts and outdoor use, read our guide on choosing the right hardware material, because the base metal matters as much as the colour.
5. Approve a physical sample
Photos and screens change colours. Before mass production, approve the colour on a real sample and keep one approved piece as your reference. Sampling takes about 7–10 days.

Frequently asked questions
Can you match a colour from my existing hardware?
Yes. Send us a physical piece of the hardware you want to match. We will plate samples against it for you to compare and approve before production.
Why does the colour look different from the photo?
Every camera and screen shows metal differently, and lighting changes how shiny surfaces look. That is why we always recommend approving a physical sample.
Can one design be made in several colours?
Yes. The same mould can be used for different plating colours, so you can offer one design in gold, silver and black without paying for a new mould.
Is gunmetal the same as black nickel?
In the bag hardware trade the names are often used for the same dark metallic grey. Because shades vary between suppliers, use our colour card name and approve a sample.
