Magnetic Snap, Twist Lock or Press Stud? How to Choose a Bag Closure
Magnetic snap, twist lock, press stud, kiss-lock frame or Sam Browne stud? Compare how each bag closure works, how secure it is and which bags it suits.

Short answer: use a magnetic snap for totes and everyday handbags that are opened often, a twist or turn lock for structured flap bags where the closure should be secure and visible, and a press stud for wallets and small leather goods. Choose a kiss-lock frame for coin purses and clutches, and a Sam Browne stud for heritage leather flaps.
The closure is the part of a bag that customers touch every time they use it, so it shapes both the look and the user experience. This guide compares the five closures we make most often, with real sizes from our range, so you can choose before you sample.
Quick picks
Opened many times a day: magnetic snap.
Needs to look premium and stay shut: twist or turn lock.
Small, flat and low profile: press stud.
Bag shape comes from the closure: kiss-lock frame.
What are the main types of bag closures?
- Magnetic snap: two magnetic discs that click together. Fitted with prongs inside the lining, or riveted with a decorative cap.
- Twist or turn lock: a front plate on the flap and a turning piece on the bag body. Turn to lock, turn to open.
- Press stud (snap button): a four-part metal snap set with a press. Closes with a firm click.
- Kiss-lock frame: a metal frame sewn or glued to the bag opening, closed by two small balls that cross over.
- Sam Browne stud: a domed brass stud that pushes through a keyhole slot in the leather.

A quick way to shortlist a closure by bag type.
When should you use a magnetic snap?
Magnetic snaps are the most common closure on everyday bags because they open and close without effort. They are also quick to install.
- Prong type: the two prongs pass through slits and are bent flat behind a washer, so the snap is hidden inside a lined bag.
- Rivet-on type: fixed with a rivet and a domed cap, so the back looks finished on unlined bags, flaps and wallets.
- Common sizes: 14mm for small purses and wallets, 18mm for handbags and totes.

Watch out: a magnetic snap holds the bag shut but does not lock it. For bags carrying valuables, or flaps that should not open in a crowd, a twist lock is the safer choice.
When is a twist or turn lock worth it?
A twist lock is the closure of choice for structured flap bags. It stays shut until it is turned, and the front plate becomes part of the design, often carrying the brand logo.
- H-shape twist lock: 44 x 45mm plate, about 25g
- Triangle twist lock: 39 x 31mm, about 16.5g
- Rectangle turn lock with loop: 46 x 17.5mm, about 29.4g

A custom front plate or logo is made with a mould. For zinc alloy the mould fee is usually USD 70–150, refundable once the agreed order quantity is reached.
Are press studs strong enough for bags?
Press studs (also called snap buttons or spring snaps) give a firm, positive click and a very low profile, which suits wallets, card holders, pouch flaps and small leather goods. For large, heavy flaps that are opened many times a day, a magnetic snap or twist lock is usually more comfortable.
- Four parts: cap and socket on top, stud and post underneath
- Sizes: 10mm and 12.5mm for light materials, 15mm for jackets, bags and leather
- Installation: set with a hand press or snap machine and the matching die

What about kiss-lock frames and Sam Browne studs?
Kiss-lock purse frames
In a frame bag the closure and the structure are the same part. Kiss-lock frames are sewn on through holes or glued into a channel, and suit coin purses, cosmetic pouches and clutches. A 5-inch (about 12.5cm) frame is a popular coin purse size.

Sam Browne studs
A Sam Browne stud is the simplest leather closure: a domed solid brass stud screwed to one layer, pushed through a keyhole slot in the other. It suits heritage-style leather flaps, straps and watch rolls, with head sizes from 5mm to 10mm.

How do I choose the right closure for my bag?
- Start with the bag type: structured flap bag, open tote, wallet or frame bag (see the chart above).
- Decide how secure it must be: a light pull to open (magnetic snap) or a deliberate turn (twist lock).
- Check whether the bag is lined: prong snaps hide inside a lining; rivet-on snaps and press studs look finished on both sides.
- Decide if the closure should show your brand: twist lock plates and custom caps can carry a logo.
- Match the finish to the rest of your hardware, and approve everything together on one sample.
How long do samples and production take?
- Samples: about 7–10 days from stock designs
- New mould: about 10–20 days
- Bulk production: about 7–30 days depending on quantity and finish
- MOQ: 100 pieces per design

Frequently asked questions
What is the most secure closure for a handbag?
A twist or turn lock, because it only opens when it is turned. A magnetic snap opens with a light pull.
What is the difference between a magnetic snap and a press stud?
A magnetic snap closes by magnetism and opens with a gentle pull, so it is quick for bags opened often. A press stud closes mechanically with a firm click and suits wallets and small leather goods.
Which size magnetic snap should I use?
14mm suits small purses and wallets; 18mm suits handbags and totes.
Can a twist lock carry our logo?
Yes. The front plate can be made to your design with a mould, usually USD 70–150 in zinc alloy, refundable once the agreed order quantity is reached.
Do I need special tools to fit these closures?
Prong magnetic snaps and twist locks with prongs need only a cutter to make slits. Press studs and rivet-on snaps need a hand press and the matching die. Screw-in parts need a small screwdriver.
What is the minimum order quantity?
100 pieces per design for all the closures in this guide. Samples take about 7–10 days.
